Screen overview

In this section you will find an explanation about the purpose of the screen, a description and code for existing atoms and tips for designing your own atoms.

  • A built- in touch screen is located in Gary’s upper body.
  • This screen allows Gary to display complex information, and allows the user to easily communicate with the physical robot (without having to go through the smartphone app).
  • However, we do refer to it as a secondary means of communication, and most of the time the screen is turned off.
  • The screen displays fall into two main categories- icons or textual information.
  • Displaying icons:
    • Displaying an icon is meant to convey a quick message.
    • The design of the icons will embody simple shapes and rounded lines, in a way that resembles the aesthetic of the shapes created by the head LEDs.
    • Examples for the icon category are presented in the atoms list below.
  • Displaying textual information:
    • Displaying texts or other forms of complex information can be done wonderfully using Gary’s built in screen.
    • The design language in these cases should aspire to resemble the design of Gary’s smartphone app.

Screen atoms

These atoms are operational and are not available for you to use, but they can inspire you to design atoms of your own.

Searching for WIFI

This is displayed when Gary is looking for a WIFI network.

Connected to WIFI

This is displayed when Gary found and connected to a WIFI network.

Battery low

This is displayed when Gary’s battery is low in order to alert the user that Gary will have to go back to the dock soon.

Battery extremely low

This is displayed when Gary’s battery is extremely low, and Gary has to stop the task and go back to the dock immediately. It is a static image with no motion.

Designing new screen atoms

  • The touch screen holds so many options, no doubt most of its atoms will be designed by you! We only designed the base screens of the operating system. Flow with your creativity and great app ideas, and design the screen display to fit them.
  • The touchscreen can obviously be used for anything you would do with any other touch screen. We suggest you remember that Gary has a lot of potential skills and abilities, and you shouldn't reduce it to just a screen on wheels.
  • Think of how you can combine the potential of the screen with all the rest of Gary’s abilities. For example, if you are developing an exercise app Gary can display the exercises on the screen, while also imitating the exercise or moving in space to motivate the user to move with it.
